EVENT LOG: Leave a Light On
LEAVE A LIGHT ON
You aren't scared of the dark, are you?
The dark is safer than the light. It's the light the reveals the things you'd rather not know. It's the light that's essential to knowledge and to growth. It's the growing things you should be worried about around here. They've been waiting for you for a long time.
... Of course, so has everything thing. But it's the growing things that have the opportunity, now. No matter how dark and stormy the night, morning always comes.
This is the event mingle post for Leave a Light On. This event includes general content of rapid plant growth and the possibility of infection by the Growth (plant-related body horror element) for participating characters. The IC duration of this event is the afternoon and evening of Day 4.
This is not an event with heavy moderator involvement. Players are welcome to make their own top-levels on this post.
Further information on the event can be found here.

The redhead reaches out to him when he gets close enough, intending to lay a hand on Casper's shoulder and provide him a bit more stability. His expression softens, and a quiet worry gnaws a hole in his gut. He doesn't think the other man should be standing and moving around much right now.]
Hey, yeah. I'm fine. You?
[Don't worry about me, look at you!]
Crazy day, huh? You look rough. Come sit down, relax a bit.
[Childe pulls up a chair next to him.]
no subject
[He is very clearly Not Fine but he's tired and used to people not caring if he's Actually Okay. The hand on his shoulder just gets a slow blink and he eyes the chair. He's just going to make it dirty... fine.]
[It's not like everyone else isn't dirty here, anyway. He sits down, head immediately dropping into his chest and posture pulled in.]
Kind of tired, though I don't need to sleep. - I mean I need to sleep eventually, but not for like, a while? Not as often as other people for sure.
no subject
They did fight a little and all.
Casper takes him up on his offer, sitting down and closing in on himself. Childe is just happy he's slightly more grounded and less likely to lose his balance. He'd long stopped caring about the mess, that was for after they weren't all picking plants out of their clothes.
His mouth still tasted sour from biting into the stems. He'd pick the plant matter out of his teeth at some point.]
You look it. Tired, I mean. You have anything to eat yet?
[The blond looked beat down.]
Never a dull moment, I guess, huh?
[Childe manages a grin, a sort of half laugh. More of a wheeze.]
no subject
[He eyes the other's food and shakes his head.]
Ever since that first day we got food I've just been eating a little bit. ... I don't want the supplies to run out. I don't know where we'd get more from.
no subject
That's a bridge we can cross when it comes up. You should eat while we have food.
[He himself didn't really feel like eating much after all of that, too. Unfortunately, Childe was an older brother.
The redhead gets up and heads back over to the serving tables, grabbing a plate and putting a few fruits on it. He waves at Bob before heading back towards Casper, laying the plate near him.]
If you can't manage it, that's fine. But have a little, when you feel like it. It might help.
no subject
... Yeah.
[He reaches for a fruit that - is it a strawberry? He's not sure right now. Everything is blending together. Anyway he pops it into his mouth. ... Tastes okay.]
I just... don't want people to get hurt if I can help it.
no subject
Childe understands that line of thinking, of making oneself smaller, of minimizing your needs for the sake of others. The corner of his mouth twitches, just a little. It's not a thought he likes.]
I get it. But... You can't do much to help people if you're barely rested and starving.
[Childe sits next to him, popping a few berries from his own plate into his mouth. He wasn't really in the mood to eat much either, but it helped him feel a bit better. And he didn't want Casper to feel like he was just going to watch him and expect him to eat.
When Casper does try a berry, though, Childe feels a bit less worried.]
Worst comes to worst, this place is full of plants. We'll figure something out if it comes to it, I'm sure.
no subject
[He's gone weeks without eating before. It... wasn't pleasant.]
But you're right. And worst comes to worst I can eat pretty much whatever if I have to. I've eaten paper before. ... As a kid. I uh... was dared to. And then I got laughed at when I did.
[But it was attention, and he had tried to pretend he was getting laughed with rather than at.]
no subject
[The redhead offers him a small smile. Childe doesn't quite have the heart in him for it to reach his eyes, but he tries. It was mostly a habit at this point, borne of hiding the violent nature of his absence from his younger siblings. An older brother desperately trying to protect them from a world he fell headfirst into.]
Today was uh. Shit. But if this place has any other surprises, we need to be on our toes.
[Laughed at for eating paper? There were so many worse and sillier things to eat.]
I mean. If you're gonna eat anything that isn't actually food, paper is probably the safest option. Kids are stupid.
no subject
[But he's right, kids are stupid.]
I'm... almost glad I ended up here, though? People have been nicer to me than I've ever had happen in my life. And I'm reasonably sure my father won't pop up out of nowhere again, so that's also a relief.
[He'd started on his journey and not known that was a possibility, so when it did happen...]
no subject
Childe was not known for his heroics, now.]
That's a bit concerning, but... I think I get it.
[Casper mentions that people have been nicer to him here than ever in his life, which was.... Perhaps even worse, than the previous sentence. Childe looks at the blond with something like dismay, he can't imagine anyone being a jackass to this guy. He was too. Nice. Even when someone was trying to kill him.]
For your sake, yeah. I hope he doesn't.
[Childe lays the spoon in the last dredges of the shaved ice-fruit-syrup mixture, placing the cup on the table. Thinking, just for a moment.]
Your life's been pretty rough, huh.
[It's not really a question, more of an observation. He doesn't elaborate.]
no subject
[It... really has. But what's the point of moping about it? He can't change his situation at home - not without leaving people to be hurt. He has to be used. That was the whole point of him even being born.]
Fate's kind of an unreasonable dick to some of us. ... Though no one else in my group's died.
[Casper you can't just say that -]
no subject
[If Childe knew how Casper felt about it all, well. Perhaps he'd realize sooner that they stood on very similar ground. For now though, he was just glad to have met the guy.
The words do bring him pause. No one else.]
I take it you've, er... already died before? What was that like?
no subject
I was... not considered an honored guest, so it... wasn't really a good experience.
no subject
[He'd been shot by a few of the Fatui guns before, to understand how it felt, what they did to the enemy. And probably also a bit of a hazing thing, now that he thought about it.
Still, not an experience he was begging for a repeat of.
Bleeding to death and then dealing with all of that? Yeah, it seemed like a lot. Really rough. Childe has no real frame of reference for any of Casper's family dynamics, he can barely imagine his parents as anything godly, but his expression is at the least, sympathetic.]
Yeah, I'd say.
no subject
[Painful in multiple ways... he isn't eager to repeat that, so no thank you.]
[His family dynamics are... complicated, to say the least.]
At least... at least I'm okay now.
[For a given value of 'okay'.]
no subject
I'm glad you're alright.
[As okay as anyone could be, all that said and done.]
no subject
[He says it casually, and then blinks. ... Maybe he shouldn't be so casual about that. Hm.]
... I don't really have many friends at home.
no subject
Hey, me neither. I get it. Making friends is hard.
[Childe's friends were few and far between. He had the Traveler, who barely tolerated him after his stunt in Liyue, and had only begun to come around to him.
And Xinyan, who needed to be lied to about who and what he really was. But she called him Red, and seemed to really like him in the short while they'd fought together.
And Yoimiya, who liked him plain and simple. No strings, no lies. She just wanted him to be good to the kids. And he was happy to play along with their game until their parents called them home.
The three guys in prison that idolized him... wasn't really much of a friendship thing, though. They covered for him when he sought out that voice that called to him, but he'd been more absorbed in keeping himself busy than he was in making a lifelong bond.
And other than that.... Childe just had his family. He travelled a lot. All over Teyvat. He was easy to get along with, and often very warm and willing to tell stories to anyone who listened, but... Lasting connections were difficult for him to maintain. He could always write letters, and visit when he could, but...
His experiences made him difficult to understand, for most people. They liked him at a distance. When they weren't involved.]
Well. You've got me, here.
no subject
[He tilts his head. He barely knows Childe and yet he's offering to be a friend? Shang Qinghua was more... obvious... but he's honestly surprised that the guy is offering to be friends with him. He seems like... almost too cool for Casper? Out of his league, in a sense? But he forces a smile to cover up his shock and nods.]
You can count on me, too.
no subject
[In Childe's mind, they'd fought, and the blond had knocked him out--- He considered Casper a bit of a buddy in his book! That was basically friendship at that point, right?]
No pressure or anything, of course.
[Childe gave him an outlet to back down, or keep distance between them, when he realized that Casper seemed... confused? Surprised? He'd respect it, if Casper decided otherwise. Casper telling him he could count on him too, had him smiling.]
Glad to hear it.
